“They decry Putin’s totalitarian and hypocritical rule and their society’s closed-minded attitudes, much of which is apparent Lerner’s and Pozdorockin’s footage surrounding the show trial. Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer is an inspiring film which explores the limits of free expression and society’s obligation to stand up for itself.”

I wrote a piece on the Washed Out show in SLC on Saturday. Shit was ILL.
“I couldn’t just stand and wait so I risked losing my prime spot and dashed to the bar, threw down a fiver and gulped a bottle of Steam in seconds flat. As if on cue, Greene and his crew filed on stage and launched immediately into a face-vibrating rendition of “Echoes” from Within and Without. Everyone was caught a little off guard—an insane flashing wall of purple light behind a live drummer, bass/synth player and Greene’s wife playing additional synths, Washed Out felt bigger than anyone expected. Greene’s haunting vocals and keys were backed by cell-liquefying bass and eerie synth, all set to a spot-on driving drum beat you could feel in your stomach. This intro set the bar high, but Greene and the band were killing it song after song, each better than the last.”

Tonight is the Portland unveiling of Yards, the latest music project of auteur Krist Krueger (of Southerly, sndtrkr, and Self Goup Records). Krueger makes music of many textures, from honest folk with guitar and vocal chords, to soul-rending abstractions of pure noise. Yards is a predominantly instrumental collage of beats, swelling sound and waves of feeling. On Friday, April 20 at 10 p.m. Yards will be performing in Salt Lake at CK STUDIO (347 W. Pierpont Avenue) and I’m pretty sure you’ll be really fucking impressed. See you there!

Getting Back Up: Tempt One Writes Again  -By Cody Kirkland
A feature article I wrote for SLUG Magazine is out online now and hot off the press in print tomorrow morning. Pick one up anyplace cool! Here is an excerpt:
‘In 2010, after being unable to draw since he was diagnosed with ALS, Tempt One wrote graffiti for the first time in seven years. Wearing the EyeWriter, Quan was able to write the word “Tempt” on a computer screen, line by line, by simply moving his eyes. “That was the first time I’ve drawn anything in seven years. I feel like I had been held under water, and someone finally reached down, and pulled my head up so I could take a breath,” says Quan, as quoted in Mick Ebeling’s TED Talk about the EyeWriter project. Although rudimentary compared to the intricate pieces that made him a graffiti legend, these first scrawls after seven years of artistic silence were monumental. “In the film, that’s sort of the highlight. When he gets back up,” says Caskey. Soon, GRL was able to link Tempt’s EyeWriter with their Laser Tag setup, which projects gigantic virtual tags onto whatever surface they choose to point it at. Although still confined to a hospital bed, Tempt is able to make his art anywhere in the world in real time. “So Tempt gets up using Laser Tag … If a GRL volunteer contacts him and says, ‘At this date and time I’m gonna put you on the Taj Mahal, or on a pyramid, or …  on the leaning tower of Pisa,’ anyone who decides they want to help him, he can draw from his hospital bed, anywhere,” says Caskey. ’

Lengthy Emails I Write to People, Part 1

I don’t know the Frenchman enough to bring him with me. 10 lives: i want to do many things with my life so i’m going to do them all. (and disregard capitalization in the process). I think i am different than i used to be a year ago or 2 years ago or 4 years ago. last year weird stuff happened and i had an emotional breakdown in portland/seattle. but now i feel more outgoing and optimistic and loving and creative. i really don’t have any contact with anyone who may think badly of me. i think i am much more… “open.”
i never considered talking to you at all, i mean why would i? i’m not one to live in the past. at all. but for some reason it seems like we would have more in common now. i have no reason to think that but i thought it. gawd, that sounds real heavy but it isn’t, i’m just typing my brain.
(adrian is still snarky but is actually much happier and nicer lately, i can tell)
i don’t own the coffee shop. i am the manager and after the owner left to do other stuff, he turned the place over to his sister and me. it is my baby. i was planning on opening my own shop downtown by now but i’m dealing with this one for a while. it is my baby. it is slowly turing into the shop i palnned on opening. planned. we are changing the name to 23rd street coffee. my coffee roaster is in portland. they are called water avenue coffee. they have a shop at the roastery. it is at 1028 SE Water Avenue.
i am not familiar with small black. i love snickers though, i became addicted to them (as well as cigarettes) last summer. not the summer we just had, the one before.
i have been single for over a year. it is weird. although i feel lonely at times, it has been neat. i hang out with my self a lot, which i enjoy very much. me head always feels like a swirling ball of energy and ideas that are about to jump out and that makes me happy and excited.
this is a very long email. i like typing.
what do you want to do with your life? what music are you into lately?
